Screening for diabetes: When, how and how often
A few months ago, the US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations for Screening for Diabetes in the United States [1] were published. These made news because the USPSTF has reduced the age of screening to 35 years of age if overweight or obese (BMI > 25 and BMI > 30 respectively) using either fasting plasma glucose or HbA1c or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). These recommendations are important because insurance companies in the US reimburse the high costs (relative to Indian costs) of these tests based on USPSTF recommendations.
